Key Achievements
Environmental Impact
Since the implementation of Reusable Cups in May 2023, Solent NHS has successfully saved 11,250 single use cups from ending up ln landfills.
Cost Savings
By eliminating 11,250 disposable cups and lids at an approximate cost of 16p each, Solent NHS has achieved cost savings of £1,800. Additionally, 1,000 reusable cups have been sold to date, signalling strong adoption among staff and visitors. Further cost savings are being made through reduced waste removal expenses, however cost savings were not the primary motivation behind this sustainability initiative.
Effective Communication
The importance of effective communication throughout the implementation process, using clear messaging and advanced notice were crucial in ensuring staff and visitors understood the upgrade to reusable cups.
Engaging the Sustainability Team
Active engagement with the sustainability team in the initiative, aligning their efforts with the hospital’s overall sustainability goals, enhanced the success of the project.
Challenges Faced
As with any significant change, Solent NHS encountered some initial resistance from a few individuals, however, this resistance was short-lived, and as staff and visitors became accustomed to the new approach, reusable cups are now part of the hospital’s sustainable culture.
Younger staff and students were easier to engage with the concept of reusable cups, whereas the older demographics required more information and persuasion, the vast majority are now firmly on board.
Conclusion
Solent NHS’s successful introduction of FSG Reusable Cups stands as a commendable step towards their sustainability and environmental responsibility. Clear communication and collaboration with the sustainability team were key factors contributing to this success, despite some initial resistance, Solent NHS continues to lead by example in the journey toward a more sustainable future.
